Linking up with Doodlebugs for her Five For Friday Linky.

1. Math Story Problems

I wrote a blog post for Tech Talk Thursday about how my kids were drawing and recording number stories on ScreenChomp. Before we did that, we practiced tons on our story mats with chips!

2.Wants and Needs

We sorted wants and needs on the Smartboard and carpet. Watched a movie with the Berenstain Bears, read books and did some cutting and gluing! Hopefully by now we now the difference between wants and needs. Although I had one little guy swear that sea shells was a need.

4. Number Combinations

We have been working on making number combinations. We use 2 coloured chips, drop and record the red + white

5. Number Combination Mini Books

I also created these little books for my kids to practice number combos with when I have a parent volunteer come. I am going to use this mini book with a set of number bracelets. (pony beads and a pipe cleaner)

Students need to move the beads on the pipe cleaner to show all the combinations for the number and then draw and record the number sentence.

You can download a free copy of the number combination mini books in my TPt store.

You need to make your own number bracelets with beads and pipe cleaners! lol

They print 2 books to a page…I cut around 3 sides….leaving 1 so I can staple it on the left side. There are 2 pages for each number with enough bracelet pictures for all the different combinations for that number. (Ex: For the number 5, there are 6 different ways to make 5)

Hope you can use it!

Have a great weekend!

Five for Friday

I am writing  this post from my iPad today...so it might be missing the usual fonts etc that it normally has.

Here are 5 things from the past week!

1. Making combinations to 5

In my small guided math groups, we were working on making combos to 5.

2. Book Character Day

Friday was Book Character day and I was dressed as Pete the Cat!

I found these shoes at a thrift shop. They were grey and 2 sizes too big. I bought them anyway and painted them red !

3. The Giver

I had never read this before and finally finished it tonight. Not sure how I feel about the ending though....

4. Pencil Sharpener sign

Tired of coming back to a broken pencil sharpener when I am away. The kids know this sharpener is a a teacher one but forget that when I have a sub. Grrr.... See how this works!

5. 100 day

Did I share this already? I forget because I share pics on Instagram but forget if I did here. Oh well glad it is over! Lol

Have a great weekend!

Tech Talk Thursday

Haven’t shared a post for Tech Talk Thursday in a while, so thought I would share something we are working on right now!
techtalk button

My kids have been working on creating and solving their own story problems in math. We used the App ScreenChomp to help us create a story problem and record our voice reading our story!

photo 5 (2)

Students were tasked with creating a subtraction story problem. They then had to tell their story using all the math vocabulary we had been talking about when creating a problem.

This is what screenchomp looks like when you open it. Pretty much like a whiteboard. My kids used styluses to draw their story and then recorded their voice telling it. Super easy to use, can take photos to add, change colours and pen widths etc.

Here are some of the stories created.

What I also love, is in the end you can share it live on their website! No account needed. I simply emailed the link to myself and will create QR codes for each one for kids to use to share their addition and subtraction stories with their parents at conferences.
Download it for free at the App Store!

Here is a pic from our 100 day on Tuesday!

Busy Times in Grade 1

We had today off of school for Louis Riel Day. He was a founder of the province of Manitoba and leader of the Metis people of the Canadian Prairies. Yay for a 3 day weekend!

Last week we were busy with Valentines activities, I Love to Read month activities as well as the normal on-goings. This week we continue to celebrate with 100 day tomorrow! I always over plan 100 day and then feel bummed that everything was rushed and didn’t work out the way I had planned. So this year we are scaling it back and doing: 100 day crowns and necklaces, 100 day number hunt, 100 day dice activity and then if time permits some 100 cups/100 puzzle time.

Here are some pics from last weeks activities:

I Love you Because…..notes

photo 1 (3)

We used our Valentine’s paper to write I Love You notes to our moms and dads. We wrote first on our whiteboards to work out our ideas and then copied on our final paper. They turned out so cute. Love grade 1 printing!

Making Words

We practiced first on our whiteboards with our foam letters. Students were given the letters for the word TECHNOLOGY and they had to move them around to create new words with their partner.

photo 2 (4)photo 3 (4)

We then used the letters in VALENTINES to create new words! This activity can be found in my TPT store.

I’ll be back tomorrow with 100 day pictures! (even though most of you have already had your 100 day!)

Happy Monday!

a little math work

We have been knee deep in subtraction and math strategies.

We have been working hard at using mental math strategies and also proving our answer. How do you know and what strategy did you use?

Here are some pics of my kids writing one more and one less number sentences.

photo 3 (3)photo 4 (3)

We also worked on some subtraction stories using some story mats and bears! Their stories were spot on and so creative!
