Whole Group Doubles Activity

This is an activity we play during Morning Meeting that works on doubles. You need 2 dice and a puzzle. We use 2 big foam dice and a puzzle with big pieces. If you want the game to last longer, you could use a puzzle with smaller pieces.

Everyone sits in a circle at the carpet. The puzzle pieces are spread out face up in the middle of the circle. The goal of the game is to be the person to finish the puzzle.

1 person starts with both dice. They roll them in their space. If they roll doubles, they need to say their number sentence out loud. Example: I roll 2 and 2. I say “ 2 + 2 = 4.” I now get to go in the middle and start building the puzzle. The dice gets passed to the next person while I am building and they keep rolling and passing it along until another person gets doubles.

If you do not roll doubles, you say “ not doubles” and you pass the dice to the person beside you. The person in the middle gets to keep building until someone else rolls doubles. Then they go back to their spot in the circle and the new person comes in.

So while you are in the middle, you want to be building as fast as you can because you want to be the person to put in the last piece!

Even if you don’t roll doubles, you are still working on your math and having to say whether or not you got a double. For older kids, you could make it so they have to say their number sentence out loud, doubles or not.

You could also make your own dice which works on certain numbers or different number sentences.
